August 1, 2021will mark the 94th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. The past 94 years have witnessed glorious achievements made by the PLA under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Faced with profound changes unseen in a century in the world today, the PLA will continue to fulfill its mission of safeguarding peace as the military of a major power.

Shared Future, Boundless Love

Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed it out that: “No country in the world can enjoy absolute security. When neighbors are in trouble, instead of tightening one’s own fences, one should extend a helping hand to them.” During the world’s fight against COVID-19 pandemic, China has shipped epidemic prevention materials to more than 150 countries. The Chinese military has also provided anti-pandemic assistance to the armed forces of dozens of countries, which includes supplying vaccines and medical materials, dispatching medical expert teams, and holding video conferences to exchange experience in pandemic prevention. The Chinese government, people and military are willing to work with the international community, including Namibia, to advance global anti-pandemic cooperation, promote global economic recovery and jointly build an “open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world of lasting peace, universal security and common prosperity.”

A Staunch Force For World Peace

China is a major contributor to the UN peacekeeping budget and the largest troop contributing country among the five permanent members of the UNSC. Over the past 30-odd years, China has participated in 25 UN peacekeeping missions and has contributed more than 40,000 “blue helmets”. 16 Chinese military personnel sacrificed their lives for world peace. China’s peacekeepers have built and repaired over 17,000 kilometers of roads, cleared and disposed of 14,000 mines and other unexploded ordnance, transported more than 1.2 million tons of materials over a total distance of more than 13 million kilometers, treated over 246,000 patients.

Actively Providing International Public Security Goods

In line with relevant UNSC resolutions, Chinese PLA Navy has dispatched 38 fleets to the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters for anti-piracy escort missions, which have protected more than 7,000 ships in over 1,300 operations, more than half of which belonging to foreign countries and international organizations.

China’s military professionals are dispatched to conduct disaster relief operations in affected countries, provide relief materials and medical aid, and strengthen international exchanges. Since 2012, China’s armed forces have participated in the search for the missing Malaysian Airliner MH370, and in the relief operations for Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the water scarcity in Maldives, the earthquake in Nepal, and the flood caused by a dam collapse in Laos. The PLAN’s hospital ship Ark Peace has fulfilled 7 voyages coded as Mission Harmony and visited 43 countries. During these visits, it provided medical services to the local communities, organized medical exchanges, and helped over 230,000 people.

Peace is an aspiration for all peoples, and development is an eternal theme of humanity. Faced with global security challenges that are becoming ever more intricate and choices that have to be made at a crossroads of human development, China firmly believes that hegemony and expansion are doomed to failure, and security and prosperity shall be shared. China will remain committed to peaceful development and work with people of all countries including Namibia, to safeguard world peace, promote common development, and to make new and greater contributions to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
